@pior makes a lot of sense here, not just that the sharpness isn't always necessary at UV seams but each sharp edge will double the geometry in game engine even if you just mark the edges as sharp (without using edgesplit modifier) as that's just how things are rendered in engines. So suggesting to mark all the UV seams as…
Yes, you'll need to turn "Auto Smooth" on and set the angle to 180 degrees, so that it doesn't set any other edges other than your custom sharp edges. It's in the "Object Data" tab. EDIT: Setting meshes smooth or flat in edit mode without sharp edges is confusing, so it's best to smooth everything every time, and set…
@GlowingPotato Smoothing can be controlled with the mark sharp / clear sharp commands in the edge menus. If the mesh has UV seams then the quickest way to add sharp edges over them is to go into edge select mode, select one of the seam edges and use the select similar > seam command to select all edge seams and apply mark…
I tested it on different systems actually. Are you sure you switched "sharp" on in the display panel? Cause it is off by default if you don't add sharp edges manually.
@Justo no addon or edgesplit needed - actually I keep things very simple. I just place seams (not sharp). When im done with unwrapping and layout - I just select all objects and do uv>seams from islands> mark sharp (uv editor) - just make sure to turn on autosmooth at 179° or so. To redo the sharp edges it's easy enough to…
Ok, thanks. Another quick question: is there some way to bevel only hardened edges? Meaning, I can mark edges as sharp (select edge -> right-click -> Mark Sharp), useful when creating smoothing groups. Can I assign a bevel modifier that only bevels the edges I have marked as sharp? If I can, whats the settings I have to…
Its a bit of a workaround but since vertex groups don't support storing edge selections. You could mark the edges you want sharp as freestyle edges, smooth the mesh. And when you want to mark them sharp you could just Shift+g and then select freestyle edges and mark them sharp again. Would be pretty simple to make a little…
