What are Orphan Vertices [Modeling]

Hello!
So i'm trying to get in depth with 3d modeling models and learn what I can do and can't do with them.

So when I was showing my model to a group some one mentioned that I had a Orphan Vertices, I've tried googling the answer but haven't found a answer. I was hoping to get a explanation of what it is?

Is it a vertice by it self on a flat plane? creating a ngon?
Is it litterally a vertex connected to nothing?
Are They Bad?

I'm super confused because It's a quad, but its stretch out? Is there a limit on how far I can distort a quad?

In your case it seems to be a vertex that is doing nothing for the silhouette, so in that last image you might as well have a triangle instead of a quad.

2,3, and 4 are all required for the reason m4dcow stated. 1 is doing nothing and the edgeloop can be removed altogether.

Orphan vertices aren't connected to anything. What you're showing here are just Ngons.

No n-gons on the mesh, mate. Poles alright, and triangle quads but, no n-gons.

Ah you're right, I thought these (in green) were connected, but it's just the angle:
