Hello!
A while ago I had the pleasure of doing a 3D model of a painting done by the artist "Skyside" from Deviant art ( http://skyside.deviantart.com/ ) and have decided to do a second!
Here is what I have so far. I am not very happy with what he looks like yet, so I am gonna bring it into zBrush and start doing some large changes to the shape. Any suggestions or comments are most welcome!
So I changed a bit of his posture and general shape, and started building out all the cloths. Once that's done I am gonna take it into zbrush and start the high poly sculpt!
Here is the zbrush model so far. The face is only a blockout. I am not sure what all to do for it so I'll just play with that later. I am liking how most everything is coming along, though I think I might go back into 3DS Max and redo the belt.
Aside from the head, the thing that currently stands out the most to me are the sleeves. They doesn't read as fabric (well, I guess his outfit might actually be made out of an animal fur or something, but you get the idea). I'm not sold on the folds, nor the weight. Time to find some references!
Keep it up, you've made some nice progress from update to update so far!
I changed a the shape/size of his head, still need to get the width/height of it.
I made his body wider, and thighs thicker.
Started playing around with the folds of his arms but felt lost so I looked up kimonos and came up with a few sketches for the shape, and I'll try bunching up a scarf tonight to get the folds down!
Today I spent time using my first max scene to redo the belt. I think the proportions are a better now. I also trashed the sleeves a bit more, I think I'll save them for last now :P
I have also been trying to get the face together. I think he's starting to get his look
The retopple ended up at exactly 8100 tris. I am super excited to get my UVs out of the way and bake him up! As always, critiques are encouraged and much welcome ^_^
I ended up baking out AO, Normals, and Bent normals. I might go back and do PRTp depending on how the lighting ends up but for now I am out of time to render!
There is a bit of clean up to do, but I am fairly happy that its coming out decently :-)
this is awesome!!! Im doing a furry friend too! hahaha and im really interested in how you achieve this look on your render, it almost look like it was drawn and its not 3d. If it is possible could you post that process too? Or do you know of any tutorial? Thanks a lot!
So! It's been over a year since I've worked on this, but I've started again! Here is a quick first painting pass, still need to touch a few parts, but I'd love to start getting some feedback about it!
This is coming along great! Since his cheek fur comes out pretty far, I think adding some shadows on his collar will help the lighting readability. If the light is coming from above the character, there would be some cast shadows around his neck.
Thank you all for the kind words and responses! I will have another update coming this weekend
SylveriaDreams - I'll add that, thanks! gfelton- Super weird. I have learned so much about modeling since starting this piece and part of me wants to go back to the sculpt, but I'd rather just finish it.
I've painted and repainted the sleeves multiple times but have yet to create something that looks natural. I've tried reshaping the geo, folding a towel over my arm for reference, nothing looks right. If anyone has any advice I'd be very happy to hear ;-;
Other then that, I spent a lot of the time reworking other parts of the geometry like making the assets on his stomach bigger, trying to give him a "pear" shape over all, and fitting the braids better. I repainted some of his shirt to be a bit more clean and gave him a better saturation in places that seemed faded.
I wish I had more to show for the time that has passed but I've been mildly busy : P
this is coming along really well! gonna look great with a little lighting. I think the sleeves looked pretty good in your highpoly, wheres that bake information with the folds etc gone? perhaps the sleeves wont look natural until you pose his arms more eg like the concept pose.

Working on Face shape/detail. I am not feeling the eyes yet, but I think they are getting closer. The brows are killing me as well x(
It'll get there I hope

All the best with this piece!
Looking forward to see your texturing work
Tom- I am hoping to keep him as close as I can get to the concept for the style.
Today I cleaned up the maps and added some base colors.
Congrats
