Hello Polycount! It's been long since I've posted, just wanted to share what I've been doing these past few weeks as far as personal projects go. Here's a sculpt for Matoi Ryuko from Kill la Kill. I'm planning to do a game res model for this one. I'm particularly going for a Street Fighter V/Overwatch style. Hopefully I can pull it off. Cheers!

one thing that looks a little weird to me is the belly button area, even for stylized I'd like a bit more refinement.
Looking good, looking forward to see progress on this!
For instance 2d anime noses are pretty sharp and well defined in side views but reduced to almost nothing on front shots, which creates some oddities when translated in 3d. A lot of anime figurines suffer from that ...

Paintjob can make it look fine but I feel like figurines treated in this style are always a bit creepy. The ones I personally like the most are the ones deviating just a bit from the original 2d stylization, just like Sefice did for Ryuko.
Interestingly enough the faces in GGear Xrd are totally racoonized *BUT* since the artists have 100% control on the shading they can get away with it and make them look exactly like 2d since shading transitions can be completely removed and even replaced by 2d strokes on top of the model.
(sorry for asking question on your thread sefice, hope it didnt bother you)
@pior I know exactly what you mean! Some figures I've seen around the net could pull it off but most of the time they just tend to look downright creepy. I loved the way Capcom approached their characters in the latest Street Fighter. Even if they are full 3D, you can still get that anime-feel to them which inspired me to create this piece.
@tits No bother at all. I love discussions like these
Maybe it's just me but I feel the head/face might be a little too big?
Thanks for that. I was playing around with some poses and noticed that the head might be a little large indeed. I wanted to keep the anime-ish proportions but on some angles it seems weird now. I'll see what I can change, hopefully not too much because personally I'm liking the stylized proportions.
She already looks amazing!
Trying to find that balance in detail so I won't end up too realistic. I might do away with some of the scratches/dust on her uniform and try to keep it as close to the SFV style.
Ignore sloppy trimming on her uniform, I'll redo those xD
I'm hoping that you'll make her expression more expressive in the final presentation, because in my opinion, one of the stronger point of Ryuuko as a character is that she was a hotheaded female MC with such expressive use of emotion because of her backstory.
I agree with Jimmy, you gotta get a solid expression on her face to really sell it! also maybe it's there but really subtle? Some SSS on the skin, will add a nice color to the skin. She feels a little cold right now. That could also be a result of the blue rim light right now.
Cheers!
@MercurialForge I agree, she could use a little more warmth to her skin. ^^" Material work is so much fun but a little too fun at times that I forget other areas to work on as much.
I like how the pose turned out.
Take whatever you learned from this piece and use it in your next work!
Can't wait to see your next piece
Overall, I'm pretty happy on how she turned out. Definitely learned a ton and I can't wait to get going again.
definitely can't wait to see what madness you dish out next!
@Shrike
I was actually contemplating whether or not I should leave more space there. Will make those quick updates. Thanks!
samll crit would be that the hands are looking really small
