I'm having hard times to model that tree,a lombardy poplar. Here are the pictures:

It has got dense amount of brush-like branches and current tree tutorials falls short for that kind of tree.I tried to draw them by hand but failed twice. There's really no texture reference for a single branch.I want to know how to create that branch texture.
Modeling wise It's early to say something.I thought that wouldn't be a huge problem If I got right looking branches texture, thanks.

It's lots of really fine lines. You could probably paint something. Or model it in 3d if you wanted to. using a paint based tool to scatter objects over a spline might work too. If you're using maya you could use paint FX

This :) Try to have as much empty space as possible and keep elements of your branch texture really thin; make sure that there's at least some space between each twig (keep overdraw in mind though). If you want to get that dense look, you will have to simply use more alpha mapped planes.

Personally, I model my branches in 3ds max if you use Max 2010 and above then branches tool in graphite tools is something you might want look into. Bake them out and you will get some nice normal maps. However, with branches this thin, you might as well just paint them by hand.

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a foliage tut coming up on 3Dmotive soon... just saying

When you think about it... it almost looks a bit like a fir, with a gravity value of -2 !

So, have a look at how people do firs, then do something similar.. but upside down! ^^
