Max 2010 Wire Parameter question

I want to use a slider to change the diffuse color of an object. I see that when I change the object to a poly and assign it a material I can get to the Diffuse color, but I can't figure out how to program the slider to run through a range of color...
I'm thinking I need to connect Hue to the slider, but it would need to understand that 1 White is 0 (or 1) and 255 Red is 100. H,S,and V can be three sliders. Seems like an awful obvious and simple thing, but I haven't found the magic google search words to find the answer.
