I started with a short, 24-sided cylinder and created one segment from it. then copied it a couple of times, welded the vertices and Path-Deformed the hell out of it and added Turbosmooth.
I might even try and rig it, when the textures are done...doesn't seem too hard, too...

There are some issues with alpha planes hiding the geometry behind them, but strangely only at certain places, or rather models (the toes are hidden, the feet are not, the legs are hidden by the upper part of the lower central beam only)...no Idea what this is caused by...
