Quick Maya Skinning/Rigging Question

I have a rigged character in Maya.
I need to add/remove geometry to the model.
How can I do this whilst preserving the rigging/weighting?

I am relatively new toMaya,however in my last studio it was our main 3d program.That was 3 mths ago and since then I have gone back to using Max.
My brain is a little hazy when it comes to Maya.

    Dunno if this is the best way, but I would duplicate the mesh, make your edits on the duplicate, and then copy the skin weights from the original mesh to the new mesh. In most cases it works pretty well, but you may have to do some touch ups depending on the extent of the edits.

    Yep I think I'd do it the same way as haikai is suggesting assuming the geometry change is something like adding/removing edge loops.
