Good Topo 3D Text for Sculpting

Hey team, did a quick search on this didn't find anything so I figured I'd ask. I've been trying to work on a logo for awhile now and have been trying to get some text into zbrush to sculpt some cool details like rock and cracks into it. Here is what i've tried, and the various problems with each attempt.

1. maya polygonal text into zbrush (horrible topology, basically impossible to sculpt)
2. Alpha'd text on zbrush plane (horrible topology, + stability problems when trying to use makemesh(sp) command from alpha menu)
3. send maya text to 3d coat for autoretopo (had to seperate each letter individually, as it has to turn the auto retopo'd mesh into a 1 piece mesh without holes, just takes a long time, lengthy annoying process)

There's got to be a better way!
