Can't find this one thing...

Does anybody remember when they first started 3d modeling and having that feeling of being overwhelmed with all this information? Well I do and one thing I swear I saw was a method of embossing. Such example would be using a picture of a coin and using a tool to get the basic shape. I am using 3ds max 2011, any ideas to what I am talking about would end at least a 10 month old mystery.

No it wasnt any of those things... I think I was smoking crack in a dream while creating the most awesome models ever and there was a magic button. Thanks for the tips.

Are you sure it was 3Ds max you saw it in?
