Nah, lampekap, this is even cooler
If you wanna know more about it, read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDF_Caterpillar_D9
We didn't mention the Caterpillar or CAT brand anywhere in/on the DVD since these things are actually a bit controversial in their use.
Thanks all. Yes the plan is to go to game spec in further parts.
Thor: just in the intro, I needed it to look really good in the viewport so I could interact with it on video. Not recommended though, it got noticeably slower when applying my shader to about 2milion tri's.
like nice work technically i gues.s but kind of a horrible thing to be cashing in on dude
Yeah, all the knives, axes, flamethrowers, nailguns, tanks and gunship helicopters we see in games and portfolios, they're okay. This? Totally inappropriate.
/facepalm
Awesome work, Laurens. Will definitely be picking up the DVD.
But those things are weapons of war and imply at least the possibility of people fighting on roughly equal terms. Something like this isn't a weapon but a tool of genocide and subjugation. I'm not saying it shouldn't be made, this or like a replica slave ship or a doom wad of auchwitcz can certainly have artistic value. but i find it distasteful to see dudes jacking off over how cool and "badass" they are. especially knowing people who have lost their heritage, family members and livelihoods to these things.
Bought the DVD when it was announced. Awesome stuff so far. I've only had the time to watch to the cabin, but the suspension was probably the most interesting so far as far as techniques are concerned.

Thanks dude. The .50cal is also one of the most interesting parts, as are the tracks.

This really isn't the place to discuss that, but I hope you realize that there are many other military vehicles that have caused more civilian deaths than this thing. I really find it irrelevant, all I do is portray the shape, since it provides an interesting subject. It's not even meant as art in the artistic way, just a study.
Oh and "cashing in": I really am not getting rich off of this.
Laurens, the vid and model look awesome! I was just wondering though, the Eat3D page says that the DVD is 3ds Max oriented, how applicable would you say this DVD could be towards Maya? I could probably figure out Maya alternates for whats done in Max, but was just wondering if there was anything that you do that could only be done in Max...
Illusions:
I think it's very generic; if you have the standard 3D skills to model something highpoly in
Maya, then you should be able to transfer everything. If you can't manage that, then I think you need some basic Maya training before you should think of starting this DVD.
there's only a few specific sections: the tracks use a special script, but I'm sure Maya can do similar. Then there's the rendersetup, though mental ray for maya might be really similar.
So in short, if you expect a "hold my hand" DVD then this is the wrong product wether you use Max or Maya, but if you want to gain insight on what the workflow is for such a complicated thing, both apps should be OK.

A cat would be nice xD
Any further plans for it? Are you gonna make a game-spec version?
I'm curious, Are you using your shader at all in the tut?

Hehe, yup, does wonders for those HP renders, A lot of people seem to even think it's actually textured on first sight.
