Red vs. Blue Action

I've been a fan of the Red vs. Blue series for years. I even have a poster signed by some of the cast. But I've always been drawn to the series because of its humor. The action in this landmark machinima series has never really been the selling point. It is limited by the constraints that all machinima must obey. So...take a look at their latest episodes...

Their two latest episodes have included blisteringly awesome action sequences. And we're not even talking about "awesome for machinima." No, any Hollywood director would give his eye teeth to have action sequences this sweet in their film.

How the hell did they manage to do this in a game engine?! I know that the Rooster Teeth team has a bit of an inside track with Bungie. But what they have in these episodes is the A material.

From hearing them speak at their panel at PAX 2009 and then also getting my hat signed after the fact its cause they're just that god damn awesome hahaha....

They stopped the panel in front of hundreds of fans just to pop open a 6 pack of beers at a 13+ convention. So yeah thats why the combination of their un-ending swagger and pure fucking awesomeness is how they did

I've been a fan since the beginning probably somewhere around the first season, even was lucky enough to catch them at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin a few times and chat with them. Very cool, down to earth guys. Reconstruction was really when the action sequences started getting ramped up. The writing was always good but that season was just jaw dropping. A lot of people probably missed that season thinking that the Blood Gulch Chronicles was the end.

Its very worthwhile to get the dvds and check out the behind the scenes stuff. They have some VERY creative ways to get the shots they want.

I started watching round season 3. LOVE IT. The new anims are really good. AND THEY'RE STILL FUNNY.

I have the Blood Gulch Chronicles DVDs, but it looks like I will need to pick up their newer entries as well. I've seen them all on-line, but the behind-the-scenes features sound good.

I'm serious though. In the last two episodes, it looks like they have actions sequences that were custom animated. It's hard to believe that sweet action like that is coming from within a game engine. Just some stunning choreography.

They use a lot of very creative after effects tricks for compositing and editing, and the Pelican that Shelia took over was actually a 3d model that they composited into the shots in season 5. I know they've found quite a few bugs and such that they use to their advantage such as this:

Except that article is from 4 years ago :P, they're definately fistdeep into bungie nowdays, full access to content and have some fulltime animators to animate the scenes.
