Small localized detail on very large meshes

One of the objects I'm working on right now is a huge canvas sheet strung up in the desert as a sun shade (it's probably about a half-acre, triangular).

The top corner is going to be up away from the player, but the lower edge will be close enough that I'd like to include some kind of depiction of stitching or finishing along the edges. I'd also considered grommets or fasteners at the two bottom corners.

The more I thought about it, the less simply tiling a texture seemed like it would work well. (Using UDK)

Has anybody done something similar before? The only other idea I had was to include a thin edgeloop down each edge and try to do something with vertex colors, but I've never used them in Unreal before and I have no idea how to make it dance that way.
