computer performance upgrade help needed

I have a Intel core 2 guad 2.4 ghz, 4 gb ddr2 800mhz ram, nividia 8600Gt with vista home basic 64-bit.

I want to improve the framerate for navigating in max2009 and also amount of polys it can handle.

I would assume to upgrade the ram to 8gb (its the max for my motherboard)
to solve this. but im not sure if anything else needs to be upgraded also.

help plz?

I haven't noticed much of a speed difference between 4 and 6 gigs of ram in 3dsmax. What you could do however is propably moving onto one of those ridiculously expensive Quadro cards, that ensures fast viewport rendering in max :P

Your RAM isn't the bottleneck, it's your video card. The majority of the viewport rendering is done with your graphics card. I'd recommend getting a video card with at least 1GB of memory. You can find a pretty damn good one on newegg.com for about $180-$300 depending on your budget.
