[Ma.K] Panzerkampfanzug Waprüf (K) KAUZ

Being stuck at home here for a week in Houston during Ike, I was without power for 11 days. Fortunately I had a generator running so I was able to salvage some of the week and do some personal work, between cleaning and cutting down fallen trees, repairing damage, etc.

I decided to do one of Kow Yokoyama's Maschinen Krieger Armored Fighting Suits: PKA Kauz. Here is a reference picture of the Kauz Model: PKA Kauz

I did take some liberties from the original Kauz design, but for the most part I've tried to remain faithful to it. Since I did not have the model infront of me I was at the mercy of any ref I could find in Ma.K books and on the internets, so I did not always have a clear view of what was going on in certain areas.









Wires: 6642 Tri's, certainly has room for optimization.


Textures: 2048x2048

fantastic work there, although I have one crit, and that's his hand... it just seems outta place being quite thin amongst the heavy duty body, perhaps it could be a little more chunky.

Everything else is spot on though, very impressed.

SWEET man! But you beat me to it, i have a Machinen Krieger myslef in the works(the SAFS mkII) But nice work, gonna add this to my reference folder. The only thing to crit here is the hand. Needs to be more bulky, other than that really nice work and REALLY nice to see finally some MAchinen Krieger stuff here!

On top of what lbi said, I also like how the normalmap came out.

Now the only things that's missing is a fine pedestal.

i would like to see some material contrasts - its all very much the same. wear and tear could also be a bit more focused - but from my own experience, just try to improve that on your next model

and just out of interesst - what the hell does Waprüf (k) mean? - actually, it sounds kinda stupid in german..

@ AimBiZ: Thanks.

@ Ibi & c0ldhands: I agree in that the hand is the weakest part of the model. In most of the ref I have, the fingers are just 'rubber' tubes. I may convert it to the more interesting hand design of the Melusine. Alot of the Ma.K Armored suits have pretty small hands in comparison with the bulkiness of the rest of the suit design.

I'm very interested in seeing the WIP of your SAFS coldhands, please post some renders.

Really cool man. your materials read real nice. I would go in and redo the hand though.
It stands out in a harsh way.

hmm, i think the specular need some work, and it needs more variation in the dirt.
the spec comes off more like "plastic" than "painted metal". maybe tone it down a bit in areas with much dirt.
also, some of the shapes are lacking definition somewhat.
the edges around the hatches could be sharpened up in the normal, they come off a bit too soft.

Love it!

One thing, make the metal showing much darker in the diffuse and brighter in the spec, and tone down the the brightness of the painted areas while upping its contrast.

Yea the material could use some more work, I originally wanted to build the materials inside of UE3 but I did not get around it (yet). Yes the hatch edges are not very tight, since I wanted to make sure they came out well on the normal map, I should give them a tighter chamfer next time.

It doesn't mean anything. There's no such word in german. Panzerkampfanzug is written as one word though. Oh and what's that eagle doing there?

The closest thing I could find: WaPruf is an abbreviation for Waffenprufamter, which means Weapons Parameter if I am not mistaken. Still doesn't make much sense in the context of the suit, but that's what it is. The Eagle was taken from a decal sheet from an actual KAUZ plastic model kit, so it's canon in the Ma.K universe.

nice texture work, I would push the contrast in the spec a bit more get some worn areas looking like the paints been rubbed off or something. Other than that, the hand looks weird, maybe just cause its so straight, a more relaxed pose for it might help it look more natural. these are pretty small things though, overall this looks ace.

it's "Waffenprüfämter" (pl.) "Waffenprüfamt" (sg.), and I wouldnt use quotes on German stuff against native German speaker like Neox

i found those quotes on like 6 sites and all sites with those names are either english with bad german parts in it or russian and as i don't speak russian i didn't understand what they are saying, so the word didn't make any sense to me, but what crazybutcher says makes sense, the Waffenprüfamt (sg.) would be something like a weapons testing agency.

Hi again! Posted last time that I was doing a Ma. K too so Ive decided to roll out what i have, still a wip. Btw if you wondered I modified mine so It has a flamethrower!
