Quick overview of current gen topology for video game characters?

My friend has years of experience working in film, specifically animated TV shows. He's interested in learning the ins and outs of topology and normal mapping techniques for current or next gen character models for games. Just wondering if anyone knows some good high level tutorials (preferably video) that he can watch just to quickly get an idea of best practices etc. He's so used to working without any sort of limitation in terms of poly budget etc. that he could use a quick guide to help him understand the current techniques. I should say we're hoping to find free tutorials on the subject matter. Found a few on Gnomon Workshop but they're too expensive.
