Since the release of the first cinematic trailer in Nov 7 2014, I fell in love with Overwatch.
Recently I’ve been playing and studying a lot of it and decided to do my own skin for one of my favorite characters: Widowmaker.
Inspired by the amazing concept artist Kelvin Chan I decided to take one of his pieces and give it a try!
I focused on every technical aspect I could find about the Overwatch pipeline.
Hard surface parts were done in Maya; organic parts were done in ZBrush; retopology mostly on Topogun; UVs on Maya again.
The final lowpoly model ended up with 32k tris!
For the texture I used Knald for the bakes; Photoshop and a little bit of Substance painter to help with the PBR workflow.
2048×2048 map for the hero; 1024×1024 for the hair; and 256×256 additional maps.
Also, I like to use this non-destructive workflow in Photoshop so I can have full control on every detail, making it easy and fast to tweak if needed.
Finally I used ZBrush for a quick pose based on actual Widowmaker’s ingame poses; and Marmoset Toolbag 3 for rendering and presentation.
I really learned a lot from all of this. It’s very special project for me and I hope you all enjoy seeing it finished as much as I do!
Special thanks to Gilberto Magno for some super tips and feedback!
Thanks for stopping by! And remember, “the world could always use more heroes”.
