Better shape for leaves cards?

Hello,

I've been recently looking into making foliage, everything is good and butter smooth but 1 issue.

Currently my workflow for leaves is I model around my atlas then I have several flat cards, I apply a bend modifier to bend them a little, then I combine several cards together and attach this to the tree. But I'm not happy with how it look like in engine. I'm looking for tips to help me find a better approach.

Looking from below the trees is fine:

But looking from sides the cards don't look that well...

I want the leaves look more volumetric,  I believe it has to do with shape of each card and how they're put together. I don't want to add many more branches on the tree because I don't want the whole ground layer to be covered in shadows that makes it look very boring.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if you have found a solution to this ( Let me know if you have) But bending the cards in more than 1 axis might help, I usually apply 2 bends to my cards then place them around the branch so it is full from all angles. :)
