Hi!

I am using 3ds max 2015 and I have some problems with displacement mapping. I hope somebody can offer some help. I am learning to model some terrain, but the ratios are just not as the should be.

My workflow: 1. I am using http://opentopo.sdsc.edu/datasets, open topography 30 m accuracy data to get geoTipp map.
2. Then I open that map with MicroDem software and convert the coloured elevation map to grayscale.

3. I use that grayscale map in 3ds max, I use it at displacement modifier with enough polygons.

Problem: The ratio just doesnt seem good to me, real. Some peaks are high, plateaus are too low,
Example: mount Kilimajaro pictures:
1. http://imgur.com/zmNyRx2 Seems to high.
http://imgur.com/tN5THW9 Seems to low, center and right peak should have only 1000m diference and the rest should be 3000m, together 5000m, the ratio it just not right.
3. http://imgur.com/1jpWB6x This is google Earth example, seems totally different.
4. http://imgur.com/iVZxCfK Displacement map

What I am doing wrong? The displacement DEM grayscale map is about 800*800 pixel.
Any help appreciated.

Edit: If you look at mount kilimanjaro pics, its just a huge mountain, but here i could't get it right. And the edges of the displacement map should be about 1500m high, there should be more height difference.
