New Rig for rendering?

Hello, I'm writing for advice on what to buy.
My current rig is:
System:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
Gigabyte Z97X-SLI
Intel i7-4790k CPU 4ghz (8 CPUs)
memory 16 gb Corsair - Vengeance
I built this rig when I first started my hobby in cg animation a bit over 2 yrs ago. I'm now feeling limited by its incapability for handling large scenes and dealing with much longer rendering times. Being that my knowledge of computer hardware is extremely limited I would like to get some advice on what to buy?
I have a estimated budget of $3000 to spend on a new rig or upgrading my current one.
