This was a personal project outside of my day to day at ILM. Based on multiple references online I created a face with the aim of giving it a feeling of life and expressiveness. In terms of type I ended up leaning a little towards Bonobo. I also wanted to stay true to elements that typical chimps have such as a dark sclera.
I began this project by creating a skeleton, using example images from museums, studying CT scan data and using available chimp anatomy resource books.
From there I created all the surface influencing muscles in a low poly form, these could be used in a production environment for muscle body simulation. For the purposes of this project I used them as a guide to sculpt my skin layer over.
I am responsible for all aspects, sculpting, posing, uvs, hair, texturing, shading and lighting.
