Hello!
I'm here to share with you guys a small scene that I'm going to do, all handpainted in 2.5D style, like we see in Diablo 3 and Battle chasers, League of legends etc...... I like this kind of art because we can see much more details without spend much polygons. The angle of the camera is 30 degrees and the FOV is 35, we still have a little bit of perspective, I dont like totally isometric. the objects need to be a plane slightly bent to work nicely with the camera movment, it needs to show a little of the side, but i'm still testing I will post some breakdowns later!
I started with some props, but this is just a sample to see how the elements looks together, many thing will change until the end so, let me know if you like it!
About the lore, it's something very simple....

I agree with @Ivanzu about the contrast but it's still looking fantastic
to me there is one thing that stands out, that you might wanna fix: the shadow on the stone fence is really blue, which looks really cool, but the rest of the scene doesnt have that, so maybe try to match the shadow colors? I was wondering if you can add blue like that using post processing in UE?
@le0tard Thank you man, the next images are coming very soon
This is the stone ground, but it is just a sample, in the final texture I will use 3x3 blocks to avoid repetitions.
Now, there is something to show you, something that was need to do. I changed the smooth groups and the normal direction in order to get a better result on the mesh surface (image 2 and 3). I really hate when the light reveals the geometry of the mesh with dark shadows, this is really awful (image 1).
And here is an exemple to see how the things will work together, with lights, fog, fov, etc... I'm not sure yet, but will be something like this, you can see some yellow light points, because there will be some candles spread on the ground. What do you think? Any suggestion?
I don't know if it makes sense for candles to be sitting on the ground in a graveyard, but some gothic style lanterns could be really cool.
I think your artstyle is great and looks very professional. Is it all handpainted in Photoshop or do you also use highpoly sculpts to bake maps?
Could you please share a screenshot of how the normals of that pillar look before and after your custom edit? I guess you bent them upwards, but it would be awesome if you can show a picture :-) Usually I face the same issue in Unity, I tried the Legacy Self-Illumination shader to compensate it. However this way is quite shitty/ineffective and I'd rather work with the new 5.5 built in shaders.
Keep up the nice work!
The painted ground stones look amazing. All the painting looks good overall, but the trees feel a bit too flat and lack depth. Share your textures and show wireframes of your meshes if you want some feedback on pushing the 3D vibe a bit more.
Like some people asked, I want to see the wireframe too, I'm interested to know how you are doing the leaves, they are really awesome and I need to learn how to make good foliage .
for the last picture i would recommend a slight stronger main light because some forms get a bit flat esspecially the rocks behind the tree.
maybe you could add some fireflies over the rocks to shape the form better...
@Sebeuroc Hey , thanks, yes, I agree with you, but I'll make a structure for the candles, maybe a mini altar, or a candelabra hanging on the wall etc...
Hey, thanks for your response, now I see what you did here, that's gonna be really helpful for me. :-)
So long,
Basti
Your breakdown are always interesting to read.
it's been awhile since my last post here. I've been busy with some issues. But I will be back soon, in this meantime, I'm thinking a lot of cool things to do in this project! Stay around, I see you soon!
@Basti
@RainbowRat Thanks for liking man!
@_Kratos_ Yeah, those games are my inspiration for this project!
@tomenjerry Hey man, Thanks. Actually, I did a simple concept for the pillar and tree to help me define the style., now I`m going to do another one for the graveyard, I need to figure out how to assemble the whole thing.
snake85027 Thanks for liking man, I can`t streaming this thing now, but maybe someday, why not!
< ASH > Thanks for liking man!
@Aluvay Thanks man!
Di$array Thanks man!
@CybranM Thanks man
Hi everyone, a long time passed since my last update. I`m working on this project in my free time, which means that you will see things here once in awhile. I`m always thinking in a way to improve this scene, even when I`m not working on it... Anyway here is the update.
I changed many things since the initial style. I repainted the stones and the trees, I`m trying not to do complex painting, but in the same time with cool details.
All the images are Wips and it might change again if need.
You may be wondering what is is, where it is going to be, etc.... I will do a concept from the whole scene seen from the top to explain!
Here is how I did the stones, I think it is easier to start from texture to 3D, it did work for me!
This last one is an integration test. This part is the initial path. To the left is the graveyard keeper`s house, going straight is the graveyard itself.
Let me know what I should improve and thanks for taking a look!
