GIFV support on Polycount!

I didn't realize this until today, but we have nice support for the GIFV video format.

1. Copy the web address for the GIFV file, for example:

   https://i.imgur.com/tfgwzwf.gifv

2. Paste it directly into your post.
3. You can also paste a MP4 link, just change the .MP4 into .GIFV !
4. Preview and then Post.

You can also right-click on the video to expose the playback controls, so you can scrub the video. Very nice!

We do have a bug currently where a front-paged GIFV will show an error message, so there's that. But GIFV is still pretty nice as a format.

We don't support WEBM nor MP4 embeds. But we do support Youtube and Vimeo, via the same copy/paste method. Just be careful to strip the S from HTTPS links!

The hell is gifv and why not support webm? By some searching it looks like gifv is just gifs that gets converted to webms when uploading on imgur. Might as well support webms directly then.

Oh that's interesting. None of them are playing on my Android phone using Chrome.

Hmm. Curious if they play on iOS.

I did... But it wasn't very helpful.  My guess is it's pretty common to most ppl that no one bothers to explain it.

My understanding; upload GIF to imgur. When copy link, just add v at the end. Done.

Yeah, I must have skipped over the very last line.... Which is the most important one... Duh.

 'All GIFs over 2MB will be converted to GIFV on upload. You can upload GIFs up to 200MB.'

You can change the extension to jpg if you want and it still animates.

How come no webm support when gifv is just a webm converted through imgur?

I dunno. It's just how Vanilla implemented their embeds. It'd be nice to have support for MP4 too.

1. Go to Imgur
2. Right-click, copy video address
3. Paste into your post, but replace the .MP4 with .GIFV
4. Click on Preview to test the embed
