maya mental ray ambient occlusion bake weirdness

Hi all. First time poster, long time lurker here.

I'm encountering some weirdness while using batch bake(mental ray) to bake ambient occlusion for a ground terrain object in a level in Maya. If I bake my 1k map within my working scene file, i get a massively blurry result with no fine detail. However if I copy/paste the necessary geometry into a new scene in a separate instance of maya and use identical mental ray and batch bake (mental ray) settings, i get the result i expect. Question is why?! I thought maybe it has something to do with scene scale, so i tried hiding and even temporarily deleting a large sky dome and clouds in the original scene file but get the same blurry result. I'm able to get the map I need, but the extra copying and pasting step is really annoying step that slows down iteration. Any ideas?
