Modo and Overlay of background Images

Still trying to pickup modo fully and develop a workflow, on modo 10 and don't know if it is a bug exclusive ot it or there is something I am missing but as far as I can tell I should be able to load a backdrop item which I have done, adjust the transparency then in the viewport setttings check overlay, so I can see through the image to the other side of a mesh intersecting with the backdrop.

but while I have done all that it seems not to have worked

    Works for me.
    Do you have a custom material on the mesh item?

    For example, I can just drag an image into the viewport, it auto creates a backdrop item. Click it allows me to change its transparency via properties in lower right. Create new mesh item, drag out a cube. Overlay either turns on or you can toggle it on via the viewport options.

    Yeah I really can't explain it although something hints towards something with the viewport render as it seems to work on Ray GL full, but not in the default view

    Just worked out what was wrong had overlay ticked but not overlay drawing, thanks for the image, the comparison helped a bunch
