Unity: Using Transparency to Punch Out Holes

Hello everyone. I'm sort of new to texturing, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I'm trying to model/texture broken glass in my game inside Unity.

A friend of mine suggested that I could just punch the hole out for the broken window by using an alpha mask.

I'm testing his suggestion with just a basic square hole so I can understand the concept, but I'm not grasping it correctly I think.

I'm using the standard shader in Unity 5.3 and I've got my UV's for the glass windows. I went into Photoshop and made a black square against a white background on the UV's diffuse sheet, but I can't get a hole to punch out correctly in Unity. What am I missing/not understanding? Like I said, I'm fairly new to this, so I'd love suggestions and advice of best practices for these sorts of techniques. Thank you all so much for those who read!
