The Lead Terrain Environment Designer uses extensive expertise in database generation technology to develop large area high-density correlated landmass databases and 3D models for instructional system products integrated into simulation products. Lead Environment Designer is responsible for developing new pipelines (or adapting old ones) to produce output for various 3D image generators, as well as correlated 2D output for SAF and mapping tools.

  Typical Duties:
  • Develop and direct the development of large area dynamic update high-density visual, NVIS, and sensor databases using commercial DBGS tools such as Terra Vista, Trian3Dbuilder, City Engine, and GIS processing tools.
  • Develop landmass databases from source data and from SEDRIS conversion for processing on PC-based IG’s using commercial Visual APIs
  • Develop and direct development of correlated databases for SAF tools, plan view displays, and maps
  • Provide support in obtaining source data for landmass database products
  • Provide what-if and make/buy analyses and write reports
  • Provide consultation and leadership to artists and art directors in order to assure optimization and consistency of integrated landmass databases
  • Develop and release requirements for database / model products, by integrating efforts with subject matter experts and Engineering Product Managers
  • Develop release processes for landmass databases and models as versioned shrink-wrapped products ready for integration into applications software within simulation training products
  • Provide bug reporting / tracking / and correction for the correlated database release products
  • Provide procedures and processes in order to document landmass databases and models by automated and semi-automated means
  • Work with subcontractors in order to specify and provide oversight for work in support of developing and evolving a streamlined, automated, efficient and rapid correlated database development process
  • Set up rules for procedures, modeling based on GIS, configure output compilers for correlated environment model databases

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Game Design, Computer Engineering, Game Art, or another relevant bachelor’s degree
  • 5-7 years’ experience in landmass database generation technology
  • Experience using DBGS tools such as Terra Vista, GIS processing, Trian3Dbuilder / City Engine / Road tools
  • Familiarity with modeling tools such as 3D Studio Max, Maya, Adobe Photoshop, and map tools such as ArcMap, ArcInfo GIS or Global Mapper
  • Working knowledge of basic to intermediate cartography (GIS database processing, vector digitization, raster editing)
  • Proficient with and a working knowledge of C++ and object-oriented software design methods
  • Working knowledge of SEDRIS transmittal format (STF), and HTML
  • Understanding of Image Generator (IG) visual integration and operations including 3D database load management
  • Ability to develop product release plans to meet or exceed the capabilities and timing of product development requirements.
  • Ability to use Multigen API and plug-in architecture in order to build and maintain streamlined processes for terrain and moving model development using Creator / Maya.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in C++ development using Visual Studio .NET
  • Ability to automate processes related to the production of terrain environments via scripting or programing
  • Proficiency with modeling tools such as 3D Studio Max, Maya, Adobe Photoshop, and map tools such as ArcMap, ArcInfo GIS or Global Mapper
  • Aptitude and/or study of Mathematics and geometry processing / rendering.

Candidates must be U.S. Persons as defined in the ITAR, 22 CFR 120.15 (U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien Status) and as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1101(a) (20).
