ambient and direction shadows casting in 3ds max

I am trying to render a scene in 3ds max in mental ray and I am using the Arch Design materials and have ambient occlusion checked in the materials. I have a sky light for ambient and I have a few directional lights to cast shadows. But for some reason the ambient will not show up...but when I delete the directional lights the ambient will show up but obviously not the shadows from the directional lights......is there a way to combine the two?
