Just some progress on a large scale piece I am going to take on. Based on the real life Schwerer Gustav the German army used in WW2. Largest man made gun! Such a savage machine! 155 feet long and 45 feet high! This beast took down forts and demolished towns!
Comments and critique are encouraged here~! Please ! Reference is hard to find! I get low quality shots from decades ago lol. I will be using smaller scale replicas and models to help me move through the blocking phase relatively quickly.
Wish me luck!

Obviously a toy model but it's proving to be useful for this first phase of the blocking!
Now, not every replica here has the same exact detail and identical pieces, but that's not a problem.
I'll be extrapolating detail from all the reference I can find!
It seems to be the most dense area with detail so I figured I try my hand at that first!
Things are looking very sharp, very rough right now but i'll keep this thread posted with more progress.
Looking at the render now i'm not feeling the floorboards that I pulled from one of the references.
They are more like cages instead of extrusions.
Changes like that and more will be made as I progress further into the updates of this massive piece!
So i'm really trying to get in there and get all of these smaller shapes that
are harder to read that seem to be the most prominent throughout the model.
Lots of similar pieces in one central area. I'm making big shapes and smaller detail shapes at the same time;
really trying to move quickly here. Next update will be bigger and sooner!
Looking good so far..
Quick update on the Gustav! Added more detail to the base structure that holds this thing together. Began to block in some of the machinery that's
in between as well as the rear towers on the back! They served as elevators to carry the giant ammunition to the top floor of the Gustav! Crazy!
Anyways, definitely need to start finalizing all the rough shapes inside and out. Next update very soon! I gotta keep this train moving!
and i'm just now reaching the top floor of the Gustav. Bottom parts have been receiving more detail and fixes as well.
It's great because once one half is blocked out I can clone it for the other side! Not for all the pieces but definitely the sides of this massive vehicle!
Here's a render of the huge gun that this thing wields and a closeup of the whole thing as it stands below.
I replaced the diamond shaped extrusions on the floor boards to a more natural cage like flooring with a bit of design implemented.
I'm well into the blocking phase but the next update will prove to go beyond that!
New updates and with new detail!
Alrighty! Quick beauty renders of what I got! There are millions of pieces to this thing and frankly I only think as far as the modeling goes I'm maybe halfway there! So much more to do! I do feel like with these renders I've reached a good point on the progress of this model
though. The top half is in needs of more detail obviously as well as the rear section. Definitely the rear section. Also I do believe there is a small turret gun mounted on the base of the cannon in some of the references which I don't yet have.
Comments and Critique are welcome please! More progress updates on the Gustav coming soon!
nice progress so far else
Came across an awesome thread of reference that really helped push the detail on this piece compared to
to what it was before. http://www.modellbau-forum.com/modellvorstellungen-bau-und-messeberichte-produktneuheiten/bauberichte/18791-german-eisenbahngeschütz-dora-1-72-von-hobby-boss/index4.html
For now I dropped a little scale dude in there. 6 ft tall more or less to keep the scale in check.
I really want to get some real cool dynamic shots of this thing so i'm setting up a lot of different camera angles
and then cherry pick ones I really really like based off feedback.
I'm utilizing a mental ray daylight system this time around. As well as some corrugated metal patterns here and there
and a dark military-like green. I want something nice out of this with style. So I'm still looking for that unique look with a blend of realism.
- Below is just a test with some metallic like shaders with subtle alterations between each.
I'm currently experimenting with true metal shaders to give The Gustav a nice contrast between it's parts and materials and not just one slapped on the entire piece but rather 2 or 3 variations.
I also have added the terrain it will be mounted on for presentation purposes.
