IN PROGRESS: Laggy material browser

When I choose a to apply a material or alter a material, it takes an extremely long time for the browser to open. I did a search and found this thread that sounds extremely to my situation:

Opening the standard material browser takes about 30-60 seconds to open, and the smart material takes 2 minutes to open, so I believe that I am encountering the exact same issue as this person.
The person eventually fixed it by reformatting their hard drive. I don't have the resources to be able to back up all of my files, so I don't think that this will be a viable solution to me.
Specs:
Windows 7
i5 2500K
16 gb RAM
nVidea GTX 550
I'm using CS6 and Photoshop and Quixel are installed on the same C: drive, no non alphanumeric characters in path. I've tried reinstalling both and I'm still running into the same problem, and this is making dDo virtually unusable.

This sounds very strange indeed, as you said in the other thread the person solved it by formatting, which leads me to think it has something to do with the HD. Are you running low on diskspace, or are the PS scratch disks full?
