Hey Guys,
I decided a couple of weeks ago to make a mech with a small diorama with the aim to choose something smaller outside of work so I can focus on quality and not lose interest.
The following are some wip shots of the mech, its based of a concept by Peter Sutherland, its supposed to be something that quite industrial and functional but also could defend itself if need be. I am aiming to break this down into a few stages for the high poly because I really want to try and push myself in terms of quality
High Poly Blockout - figure out silhouette and get design working in 3d
Match Concept - Split the model into parts and focus on nailing all the major shapes from the concept, splitting allows to focus in on certain areas so it doesn't become overwhelming.
'Paul Pepera Pass' - Detail everything until it matches the quality of paul's work, piece by piece.
I have currently just finished the Match concept stage, (there are probably a few areas from keyshot renders which I will clean up) as you can see a few things have changed, I have redesigned the cab and legs to improve the silhouette and make it look more interesting in those areas.
Peter's awesome concept
The diorama will be a small river bed scene and hopefully a cutting tree with random bits of bark flying everywhere, I have done a river bed sculpt with a few rocks and such so far.

I hope you dont lose the details like Ladders, barriers, warnign sign and generator room etc. .. your mesh looks good except the cockpit in my eyes because i cant "understand'" the function in the picture. And dont spare with the hyrdaulic extension, in the concept its very good looking but in your mesh it has a cheap design.
@Cibo: Cheers for the crit, I want it to be industrial so I really want to push that feel with warning signs and text etc, Excavator style branding basically. Yer the cockpit is probably the least fleshed out bit in my eyes at the moment, but don't worry this will make more sense as I focus on that section. I will be building some more plating and more hydraulics into it now I have the major shapes down so this will pull it together more and hopefully solidify it a bit more and prevent it from looking cheap
Here are some screens of the block-out I have been working on. I have had to bulk the legs up as the concept just looked a bit weak. I'm also trying to make sense of some of the hydraulics and mechanics.
Once I am happy with the block-out I will break the model in to sections and start detailing.
Keep up the good work man!
Yer the Blockout for your mech is looking good, I think yours is the same as mine though, the top section looks really good but the legs could do with some work. They don't feel like they would move that easily at the moment and that the mech would struggle to walk.
I really like the section with the cutting blade that looks like it has the potential to put loads of detail into it.
Also just a FYI we are having a bit of a model off polycount people. It doesn't help when someone (who will remain unnamed ^^^) decides to make posts that are so vague only I can understand them.
I will take another look at the legs, as I agree, they are looking a bit bulky now.
I'll post my updates as soon as these are implemented.
Oh and as stated; this is a "Mech Model Off".
Anyone wishing to participate feel free.
I guess the texturing will be difficult...
