3DS Max 2011+ - Rendering High quality Shadows and Translucency scenes?

Hey to all,

As the titles says, I'm in a pickle, I seem unable to render objects in a scene with high quality shadows and translucency in any format.

Basically, think of it this way, if I have a glass that is tinted blue or green, I would like my light source to travel through, scatter, and bounce the shadows and tint into the scene (kinda like SSS if you will).

Issue is, I can't seem able to do it. I tried using SSS in Mental Ray for Max, as well more water/glass like materials, but they refuse to work. I either get pitch black shadows (without any scatter) or I do get some form of scatter, but almost non existent (ei: my glass might as well no exist in the scene, since it's so faint).
