I'm following tutorials and people seem to just be painting (not rgb texturing) their details with standard brush. Whenever I try this it makes the surface bumpy. I don't want the silhouette of the shape to change at all. Am I missing something?

You need to disable zadd or zsub as your sculpting mode. It should just be RGB if you only want to transfer colors.

Wait, are you talking about polypainting, or sculpting surface details? If you use alphas, you can do very nice surface details without deforming it or making it lumpy.

Yep, sculpting surface detail. I only have zadd or zsub highlighted, not RGB. I think I'm using alpha? Is it possible to paint only the alpha? Because I think this is something to do with me still having standard brush or whatever selected? So I'm adding the alpha as intended but also the type of brush being used if you understand?
