Ok I have a complicated task. I need to create a device that will be able to transform into at least 8 different modes. Each mode with its own distinct outline. There is the old cheating method of using "nanobots" or such to get around doing this, but trying not to use this excuse unless I have to. While there is also the lesser excuse of having parts float in midair as they attach themselves together.

Is there any good guides for creating such? I thought at least in part I could cheat with having a central large cylinder that flowers open with the different components for each inside that then animate to form new mode (each mode hidden until called for). The size of the cylinder though would ruing the initial state outline. That and I would still have to integrate the outside of the initial mode into each version.

(posted in general per it seems something broader than the tech art section would provide)
