ZBrush: Brush settings greyed out, can't adjust spacing

Hey there. I'm just starting to pick up ZBrush (4R6) but I've run in to a problem.

For some reason, all of the stroke modifiers appear as greyed out. As a result, I can't change the spacing options for my brush, which means I end up with strange lumpy strokes while sculpting. This happens for every brush and stroke setting, as far as I can tell. I've looked in the brush settings up the top, and gone in to the modifiers menu there, but it seems to be completely different from the options presented (and greyed out) in the shelf on the side (left).

I've searched around, but I can't find a solution for this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

make sure the edit button is turned on...its next to draw,move ,scale ,rotate

Yup, edit mode is definitely on. I've tried playing with the lazy mouse settings too, which seems to help a little bit, but I'd still like to access the stroke options.

Try exiting out of Edit mode, re-drawing your mesh, then re-entering into edit mode. That worked for me, and my stroke options were also greyed out.

Do you have an active, sculptable mesh drawn on the canvas when you try to edit the brush?
