3DS Max 2013: How to wrap splines around objects

As the title suggests, I need to learn how to wrap a spline around a model, I have searched youtube for countless tutorials and they most of them do it the most stupid way (e.g. using a basic helix)
I need to wrap splines around quite a few objects, I have seen people do it maya efficiently as hell.

when I try to use perspective it doesn't wrap up the model, it just seems to follow the ground plane, it kinda sucks.

I can't use maya, the UI to me seems weird, but max seems so bad for this sort of thing and it kind of annoys me to hell!

any help would be awesome, this is starting to lower my motivation on the fact I can't do one simple thing.
