Shaping the wire to match the helmet help

Hello guys, i am working on this kind of m35 german helmet with the wire on the top like this:

I have already made the wire and the helmet, but when trying to put the mesh it becomes all flat looking and its impossible to alaign it properlly.
I have tryied using FFD cages and cylinders and tryied sperify, but its not the way to go. Maybe you have an idea of how i could make it.

    I wouldn't try to conform it to the helmet, but instead create a sphere with 10-14 hexagon faces and conform that to the helmet. Next extract the edges you want, add twisted spirals with snapping where they're needed, then weld everything together.

    make a plane (You might want to turbosmooth it)


    duplicate the plane
    conform the duplicate plane to the helmet in some way - I'd consider using a cloth sim but might ditch the idea if it got difficult.

    skinwrap the wire to the original plane
    morph the original plane to the duplicate - voila, wire follows it
