3D Coat Crashing on UV unwrap?

3D Coat crashes when I try to unwrap UVs or update islands on a model I have with a couple pieces of disconnected geometry. I exploded out several pieces of armor and would like to UV them all to one map, but every time I attempt to unwrap 3D Coat freezes and crashes. I'm OSX Mountain Lion and 3D Coat v4, but I took the model home and tried it on my Windows 8 computer running 3DC v3.7-- same problem, althought it did let me submit a bug report on Windows.

Has anyoe here run into this? I've done some googling, but the most I've found is this ancient support ticket which it says is resolved: http://3d-coat.com/mantis/view.php?id=1093#bugnotes

Some more info: I use 3DC all the time in my workflow, I do sculpting in Zbrush, export a hipoly OBJ, retopo and UV in 3DC, then bake in XNormal. The only thing different than usual here is I am trying to UV multiple pieces of disconnected geometry all at once (Helmet, cuirass, pauldrons, etc.), is there some reason this would not work?

I've also posted this on their forums, maybe they'll know what to do.
