i7-950 vs i7-4770k vs Xeon-X5690

Sup. I though I would share these rendering results because sometimes its hard to find online. I just got the new i7-4770k and it cuts render times in HALF. Results:

i7-950= 7m26s

Xeon-X5690= 4m 48s

i7-4770k@4.3ghz= 3m 31s

I used Mental Ray w/ final gather here is the rendered image 1280x720:

cpuboss is a good website to compare cpus =D , they dont really use real world examples like this, but the times you saw and the benchmarks they have show the same results http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-950-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4770K But then not many people have the money to get a 4770k

Offline CPU based rendering performance is going to scale reliable with raw CPU power, which you can find benchmark numbers here: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html also searchable list of pretty much every cpu: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

For instance:
I7 950: 5,667
I7 4770K: 10,130

So no surprises there.

Your I7 3930K: 12,083, so another 20% or so faster than the 4770. The 3930K is the fastest CPU you can buy for sane money, to get even another 15% or so faster you have to spend like 2 grand. At which point it makes more sense to build a dual CPU system with two Xeon E5-1650's or something.

yeah i got my 3930 for ridiculously cheap as well, like half the RRP on ebay, fully sealed box and everything.

don't get me wrong, i'm absolutely certain at this point that it was probably an employee from somewhere who found one that fell out of a delivery crate and decided to sell it quick... but still, it's a fucking beast of a CPU for the price i paid.

yes cpuboss and gpuboss are the shit!
cpubenchmark.net looks pretty reliable too, since it pretty much matched my results.

You could always overclock those cpu's for more power. Third party coolers are pretty cheap and you can get >4ghz speeds pretty easily. Even my old i7 920 is running pretty stable at 4ghz.

I did overclock the i7-950 by .5ghz but rendering in V-ray was actually slower?!? Any ideas?

But the 4770k is so easy to overclock my Grandmom could do it.

Eh? That's weird..I don't think the Nehalems have any built in throttling when tempreatures get too high. I'll have to do some tests with my 920 to see if overclocking actually reduces performance with CPU renderers.

I got the Asus Z87-Deluxe board with "TPU". Flip the TPU switch and it automatically overclocks by .8ghz.
