Zbrush scaling breaking geometry

I'm having some trouble scaling a head bust i've been working on. The subtool scales fine but when I go to resume working on it in higher subdivisions the geometry breaks. I've tried scaling inside Zbrush and in Maya using Goz and still does the same thing. I've tried scaling it gradually and I can see the geometry start to deform if I go up the subdivisions. Never had an issue with this before and have always used the same scaling methods.

Does anyone know how to avoid this issue or know of a workaround at all?
