Okay, I got super excited when I read what the challenge was about. This is going to be super fun!
First step so far has been to pick the game I wanted to create an entry from. My first idea was to do something related to EVO: Search for Eden on the SNES, but still I kept on thinking and ended up with a shortlist consisting of Starfox 64, Harvest Moon 64 and EVO. I ultimately settled for EVO as it really is a game that marked my childhood and it probably is one of my favorite games of all time.
I went running outside and it hit me that I could do a nice diorama of the dino era of the game. Somewhere in between the desert where you fight the bees and when the meteors start raining on Earth. As I came back home, I got my marker out and sketched out my concept. Here it is:
Volcano as a center piece, I plan on modelling the smoke that's coming out of it. Couple of meteors that are inbound. I'll add some dinosaurs, a T-Rex, a Stego and what would be the player's dino on the other side near the piece of meat to the left. There will be four "areas" around the volcano, the bees' desert on the side that's not visible in the drawing, the red canyon enviro, the stego's area with some plants and a cave and rocks.
When I started coloring the drawing it hit me that I should invert some things, like the stego's enviro should be that color but have the trees that I've put near the T-Rex and the ramp that's there should be on the red canyon enviro instead. Small mistakes that I'll fix when I start modelling it. I think I'll try to add a lava flow that runs just behind the cave, I'll have to see about this anyways.
Good luck to everyone!

@papercliphouse: Since you'll be able to move the camera around the diorama, I'm not sure how necessary it is to put one dino more front and center in the composition, but if it was a still shot I'd definitely do it. I'll keep that in mind when I get to place dinos around! Thanks!
Things are starting to take shape. Any crits welcome! I shall use Sketchfab for the next update...
Feedback would be great on the smoke trail, I'm not so sure about it but I wanted to make something kinda puffy. The meteor trails will be added later when I have the texture done for them and I still have to add some little details on the cliffs here and there to suggest that it's a bit rougher than it is at the moment.
I'll start working on the dinos when I have a head start on the textures as well!
Not sure if you are planning this but I think it would work really well to represent the evolution of the player character around the carousel if that makes sense with the fish transition to land ect.
I had not thought of this, but it sounds like a great idea. I'll see when I start working on the dinosaurs how many player evolutions I could make. Thanks!
keep it up
And now...
Meteors! In color!
Hope to be done with the environment's textures this weekend.

Got some sorting issues with the transparency on the palm trees, it's annoying...
Also, does anyone know how to re-upload a model in Sketchfab? I can't figure it out somehow... Edit: I got it now.
Everything in Sketchfab glory:

Hopefully starting to texture all these tomorrow! Crits welcome!
Got some more texture work done today, I'm out of town tomorrow but I should be able to squeeze in the little bit of work that remains to be done on Sunday. As long as nothing unexpected happens, everything should be fine!
Here's my stegosaurus with the transparency deactivated...

I want to say thank you to everyone that took an interest in my project and brought new ideas to the table! Good luck to everyone!
