Photoshop Painting tutorial: quick start using photos and filters

I've been messing around with a few photoshop filters, and I found a few that have really sped up getting a painting started. Maybe you can get a decent use out of them too.

I'll use this picture as an example

The filters are:

Median (filters>noise>median)
Maximum (filters>other>maximum)
Minimum (filters>other>minimum)

Here's how they look:

Here's a combo of Median and Minimum. Mess with combinations and the sliders and get the balance you want.

To mix things up a bit, use Content Aware. I removed the figures and changed a few things.
(edit>fill>content aware)

The image is too dark, and I may want some different color balance. Ctrl+L for levels, and Ctrl+B for color balance.

I'll bet you can see some shapes in there that you really want to paint. The brain has the tendency to still see shapes in the blobs. Combine other images using this same method. Go nuts!
