Gears of War 3 Character model question

I recently picked up the Ballistic Gears Of War 3 making of book.
They show some locust character shots which disply the wires.
I noticed that the model is broken into segments Head,Torso,Legs,arms,feet etc.
My question is can anyone explain why on the arm for instance the shoulder is closed,same with the head,mid riff and feet.
The extra polys used close to 1 vertex.
I am unsure why.I understand for this character he has different armour to re cretate different locust classes but any reason why they close these segments?
Is it to aid rigging or to make it easier for code?
Me, personally i have deleted not not added the extra tri's to close these parts.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
