edit:
This is my final work.
Hello all, I'm working on a model of a Thompson machine gun. So far I have my high poly mostly completed, except for one piece. I'm having trouble with making the vents in the nozzle; if anyone has any tips it would be much appreciated. Also any constructive criticism would be helpful. Thanks.
Here is one of the reference images I've been using.

Not ideal I know but might be of some use.
Id just mask from the side and invert and then planar flatten or clip it out. But that's in ZB, what are you using for HP? If your in Max etc then Id probably connect the edges around that section till I had enough for the grooves, do a cut along sides and then delete polies and bridge edges.
Hope that's useful?
As for the flash diffuser thing, you just need more geo to support the corners of the cutouts. If you don't have enough currently, I would just remake that front part as a separate piece from the rest of the barrel, since you really don't need that much geo for the rest of it.
AdamRodgers: Absolutely! I would love more reference. I had trouble with a few pieces because I lacked reference. The back for example, I had no images of the back of the gun, I'm only guessing that that is how that little cylinder fits in.
TrampledUnderFoot: I'm not similar with names of the parts for guns. I'm not sure where to look of an ejection port in my reference, do you think you can expand on that? Also thanks for the tip; I'll try adding more geo.
Heres one for the road -
BTW I think I got my best refs from Gunporn site. Not sure of exact addy but google it and be carefull obviously. There isn't any actual pornography there in case your worried.
And I'm working in max, I'll give what you suggested a try.
Some more refs
Hope thats of some use, I visited Leeds Armoury not long back and got some but itll take time to find them in my photos library and tbh they are badly lit and not great images.
Have fun and Goodluck

Its not perfect, but it will work.
- The rear of the receiver is off by a lot.
- The charging handle could be a bit more solid.
- The area you asked for help to make vents is called the Cutts Compensator. Personally I would have extruded the sections inwards and connected them to the horizontal barrel cavity. For edge tightness control I would then extrude the resulting loop.
- The barrel ribs are too thick.
