Hi, i think the original grip looks better, you modified the grip a bit. Some of the floaters and extrusions are 90 degrees and non tapered so you'll have to taper them a tiny bit to bake nice.
Have fun with the guns and texture them
Hey man, thanks for the response! Can you point out where the grip looks different?
There's no floaters, but I'll definitely check the extrusions. I was hoping their bevels would be enough, but you may be right. Thanks for pointing it out
yeah, respawnrt is right.
i think the grip would be easier to hold without extruded parts.
those dots could also be smaller (and in bigger amount), maybe it's not clear on concept but i was going for something like dots on walther P99's grip.
also, it seems you misinterpreted some of the small plates on the body.
the ones on blue part above the ammo cylinder thing were supposed to be flat, and the one with small "vent" on dark part is actually a cavity rather than convex.
Love these designs and you've done a great job with the first one interpreting it into 3d, the only thing i notice is the trigger.
A couple of things i noticed on the second one
The bit on the top of the barrel, the curve left looks like it need tightening up a bit and the curve on the right looks like it needs relaxing, in the concept it looks to have two curves rather then one if you get what i mean?
awesome, you clearly have no problems turning those into decent models.
few areas feel more blocky than on the concept - for example that part on top, with laser aim thing. it has rounded edges in original while your version made it more flat and rectangle like.
the back part of gun is also slightly angled on concept, and not perfectly vertical. i know there's bunch of sloppy lines on the pic but this time it was intentional
@Blaisoid Dude, I'm glad you approve. I keep hoping you'll check these out and crit, since you know the concept better than anyone. haha. If you dig the models, I must be doing something right. I'll make those changes asap. Planning on doing one or two more after this.
Ben, that low poly bake looks sweet. Only crit I have is that you've got some artifacting and wobbliness on the grip of the pistol, maybe chamfer a couple of those edgeloops to get some more information for the high poly to bake onto? Would love to see these bad boys textured, they're really solid pieces.
i really dont get how you guys get so awsome bakes ( i see some faultys) But my bakes usually turns out like shit in Maya 2012 :P. I try to cut the UV's right, so the seams are barely visible. But some things just sucks!!
Beautiful models and i love the bake. Want to see this babe textured!
@Enexus Thanks dude! I've never really done any videos of my process, but it may totally be worth doing if folks want it.
@Chris Thanks man! I think you're right about the grip. I'll go bake and rebake at some point to get something cleaner. So far, the plan is to finish the HP of the second pistol; then move on to one of the submachine gun concepts. After than I'll get some lo polys and textures rolling.
@wirrexx I use xnormal and that works for me. I just explode the model, make a cage, and use the raycast distance calculator. Seems to do the trick every time. And thanks! Glad you dit them I'll be sure to get them all textured at some point.
nice progress on the grip. i was going to post a paintover to show you how i imagined certain areas of the gun but sadly my pc crashed before i saved it.
Textures looking great, the only thing i would suggest is could you paint in a bit of occlusion or a seam where parts of the gun join together against flat polys. For example here:
And around the barrel maybe, so it gives the look that they are intersecting?
I'm not digging the texture work ATM, I feel it's a bit noisey. To much fine detail, try using broader strokes. Sometimes less is more when it comes to guns.
Only comment on the textures from the brief look today would be bigger scale damage on the edges, perhaps going into your high poly in zbrush with Hpolish and putting a few eye catching dents in there.
I wouldn't necessarily it isn't good, but there's a lot of haphazard detail. Most of the damage done to the gun seems to be thrown around without a real reason why it'd be there. Try thinking how the gun would be used: The grip would have discoloration marks on the rubber/plastic from being held, the edges of the white piece would have more wear than the flat part, the muzzle wouldn't have a lot of damage, but could be have the open end burnt from the gunpowder/laser/flaming bullets of evil, etc.
Another thing why it looks off, is that you are using a solid color for the painted metal. Even so, you should add some bare metal overlays to add some detail. It doesn't have to be very powerful, just enough to break up the uniformity of the plate. You could even think of adding some fine horizontal scratches, like it's been holstered a lot of times.
Everyone struggles at first with texturing. I should know, since I'm in the same boat as you. Just keep at it and you're bound to get better. Looking forward to future updates.:)

other than that the gun looks great, keep it up!
Blasoid, thanks again for letting me model these! They're a ton of fun.
Fredd 2303: Cheers mate! Glad ya dig
And before I texture that one, I started modeling this one, though I still have more to do. Here's the concept

Hope that helps and keep up the cracking work!

@benc I hadn't even noticed that! Thanks for pointing it out
@makecg Thanks Lance

I haven't made the other changes quite yet, but I started the handle really quick

damage seems a bit excessive, other than that it looks pretty sweet.

Also throw in some edge highlights.
