I still think for that first picture that you need to copy/paste some of those hills and have them go outside of the screen so that it appears bigger than what is shown. I'm not sure on the technicalities but they proxy animate and transfer the data across, Ie they use a system of weighting on a rig that matches closely/if not exact to the high-poly rig and animate through that.
