for learning/practice try modeling 500 polys or less things and texturing them with 128x128 textures. This will help you learn to better use your UV space to maximize your detail in the texture. the smaller textures will make texturing go faster so less time spent on each one while learning and helps learn the importance… -

You could maybe check out DH's AOE3 work here - http://www.horribledeath.com/2d3d.htm He has wireframes and flats on there... looks like under 500 polys, and a 256x256 texture for buildings, on average. Certainly not anything above 512x512. -

Okay I see. I don't think anything about 50k polys on that barrel is going to make the normals any better. About the environment, I would definitely go for scaffolding scattered around the edge of the scene.
