I think you guys might be right, somewhere around 300-500 but that's if you broaden the definition to anyone who makes characters for any kind of game, if you look in the mobile market you have artists who make characters but wear a lot of other hats too. I think you underestimate the difficulties. Making games is more than making art. Art and to a degree programming can be outsourced and in-sourced, but even that isn't easy.
