You could probably automate the move to origin and the placement of the pivot point through some simple scripting. If you're a 3dsmax user. Oh good. That thing has historically been a bit flaky but the improvements to scripting support in recent versions may have resolved all that. -

This might help to understand smoothing groups. You pick some polys and put them in a smoothing group. If polys are in different smoothing groups you get a hard edge.
