I think I remember Doom 3 actually using displacement maps in real-time, but that's the only direct application of it in an engine I've seen. However, now with DirectX 11, it can be used for further real-time tessellation.

I don't know maybe I am not able to render hairs (fibermesh) in Maya hardware 2.0 (directx 11) properly (my first try) as there are no black spots/dots in zbrush BPR (image below). thanks for the comment :)

tried that with Maya 09 and 11, it caused some issues when 09 was eventually uninstalled (11 wouldn't even be recognised among the list of programs on the computer due to both being called Maya.exe (or something)).
